Cougars News 2009

The 2009 track season is done and it was another great year for our club. Our final wrap up potluck and awards get-together took place at the Cumberland Cultural Centre on October 6. The dinner was excellent as usual and there were many ribbons and awards handed out. Accolades for top performance of the year went jointly to Haleigh Lloyd and Cody Parker; what a great season they had!

The advanced group are now into fall training - check with John May or Graham Morfitt for times, or if you feel ready to join this group.

The last Canadian meets involving our club were the Junior Nationals in PEI and the Legions in Sherbrooke, Quebec which were attended by Haleigh Lloyd. Haleigh ended her track season on a bright note with double PBs at both meets in the 100M hurdles, qualifying for the finals in her events, and gold medals in all relay races (including a meet record in the 4x400 at PEI). Way to go, Haleigh!
Links to full results from these meets can be found on the results page.

Applause is also in order for Graham Morfitt who won silver at the World Masters throws competion in Finland this summer! Graham also placed 7th in the throws pentathalon.

Comox Valley Cougars Track Meet June 27 & 28

Our 2009 track meet was a resounding success despite the rain and cold on Saturday (hot beverages were the order of the day at the concession!). We would like to thank all of the fabulous volunteers who made it happen! Please get your pictures in to Eveline so that they can be posted on our photo gallery page.

Club Clothing

Leslie Carr is handling the sales for our new club Ts, shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants, so see her for sizes.
The special order track suits were ready just in time for our track meet - our athletes looked great in them! For those who wish they had ordered an outfit, let Eveline know if you would like one as we may be able to do another run of them.

BC High School Championships Meet

Our athletes posted fine performances; Cody Parker placed first in Javelin as did Haleigh Lloyd in her Hurdle events, while Nick Blackburn was third in 400m Hurdles as was Shane McIvor in 100m Sprints. Kirstin Stewart's excellent effort in Javelin earned her a 6th place finish in a big field of 31. Way to go Cougars!

Island High School Meet

Here's how our Cougars did:
Haleigh LLoyd 400M and 100m Hurdle "Sr/Open Dual Champion"....Haleigh broke the Vancouver Island High School girls 400m hurdle record that had stood for 11 years and was held by a former Cougar Rebecca Dasilva.
Nick Blackburn 400mH "Sr/openChampion" Repeat Champion , Defended his "Crown" having won the event last year as well.
Cody Parker Javelin "Sr/Open Champion" , threw a "Monstrous" 53.15 metres with the 800 Gram Javelin....his previous PB was 47 with the 700 gram Javelin!
Shane McIver 100m "Sr/Open Champion"...Prevailed thru windy races plus and minus to take the Crown, Fastest HS Athlete on the Isalnd.
Kirstin Stewart 2nd place Javelin "Sr/Open"
As well as these Automatic Qualifiers Sadie Horner at 4th in 400H has been nominated through the open zone and may also be attending the BC meet. Sadie ran an incredible Personal best by a few seconds to obtain 4th and this possible spot.
Alex Leslie grade 8/9 Boys 100 H Champion. Awaiting notification to be included in the grade 8/9 100H competition.
Aside from those qualifying for the BCs we are also proud to mention these performances ...
Sasha Halfyard's incredible attempt at all three sprints having qualified to the final in all 3 the first day had to run the 400 final, 100 final immediately after the 400 final, and the 200 final all within aless than 1 hour window A Stellar Performance in a league of its own...
Dylan Schoonover's Personal Best attempts in both 100 and 200 fell narrowly short of qualifying to the finals in both events but he gave a superlative effort in his attempt...
Despite feeling "under the weather" on Wednesday Roxanne Power qualified for the final in the 400m and finished her first ever 800m. Unfortunately she felt worse on Thursday and so had to scratch from the final, but we applaud her effort!
Also out doing their schools proud were Kyla Cordick, Alexa Hornstein, and Jamie O'Hara.
Coaches John May and Rob English were both in attendance over the two day meet and are ecstatic with the results of all the Cougar athletes and the manner in which they represented their schools and indirectly the club...Congratulations to all!

Track for life

A track career is more than 2 or three seasons. John & Graham regularly remind athletes that if you really want to know how good you can be at this sport, you need to find a way to stay in it at least up to age 28. Does this mean training full-time and hoping for a Nike sponsorship? Absolutely not.
But it does mean several days each week at the track working on your weaknesses, and refining your strengths. Maybe you're walking around right now with the raw materials of an Olympian, Canadian Champion or World Championships Team member. Time will tell... do you have what it takes to find out?
Click here for a quick snapshot of the many opportunities that lie in your path as a track & field athlete.

The Cougar programs

Advanced Group

If you are 14 years or older, and can commit at least 4 days a week to your track & field training, then the Advanced Group is for you. What is the Advanced Group? It is the Cougars' core group of athletes aged 14 years & older that participate in advanced training sessions, work with similar groups from other island clubs on a regular basis, and compete in special out of province competitions.
Contact John May or Graham Morfitt to get started.

Development Group

Younger athletes are welcome to join our Junior Development program for 9 to 13 years of age. We will be starting general practices in early March, and have an exciting season planned with the Island Series of meets, and other events off the Island.

Get ready for another great Cougar season in 2009! Go to our Contacts page if you are interested in joining, and to be kept informed of our upcoming membership meeting & orientation night.
